Our man Frid, hailing from one of our favourite cities, York.
An up and coming emcee with a solid flow and on fresh beats with a golden era twist to them.
Frid has a wise head on his shoulders and not only does he sound the part but he looks the part too having made the decision to rock fresh!
Rockfresh: Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Frid: I’m Frid. Born in York, raised later in Hindley, now living in Manchester. I’m just the whole north of England in one dude! I’m just me; proud father or my little girl, football fanatic, lyricist, label owner, rapper, performer, part-time drunk, full time social clown and all round working class hero [laughs]. Above anything though I’m just a normal guy. I work my arse off for a crust, try and have fun at the same time and raise my baby right.
Rockfresh: What made you pick up a mic?
Frid: Erm, it was a natural progression to be honest. I was at a stage at school where I’d pretty much lost all patience with it ‘cause I wasn’t learning fuck all. I was getting terrible grades, because I didn’t give a toss. The only thing I got any kind of credit for was poetry. As I grew up and got more into music – and more specifically Hip Hop – those poems started turning into bars and stuff. I related to Hip Hop because of the personal element of the genre, and a few rappers seemed to be talking about similar social and family experiences and problems to myself, and they were saying it in such a way that I was like “Jesus, this is something different”. The music did something to me that made me think I could have an outlet to express myself and my feelings and stuff, which I might not otherwise have had. Then, about three years later in the early part of 2001, I was introduced to a friend of a friend. He was just starting to produce and sound record and had a little set up in his spare room. I went round, did some songs and it went from there. The songs were horrible, but I soon started getting more comfortable with my voice and presence. The rest is history really, so shouts to c64 of Dual Core. We had fun with it, that’s for sure. Good times!
Rockfresh: What artists do you draw your inspiration from?
Frid: Literally everyone I hear, from all genres. I’m like a sponge man, seriously. But it’s not just artists, it’s life in general. My previous work has been quite introverted and reflective, like an autobiography really. But anything and anyone can and does inspire me. I know it’s sounds like a corny answer or a soundbite or whatever, but every thing and every one inspires me in someway. More recently my little girl though. She’s the reason I’m doing this, to leave a legacy of some kind on some level. Something she can listen to and be proud of, rather than being properly embarrassed, hopefully [laughs].
Rockfresh: What can we expect to see from you in the next year?
Frid: Lots of stuff. Recently, I signed Uppacut to Wenlock Music and we’re about to hit the stage really soon, just getting a couple of things sorted on that. We are working on a joint album too called ‘Not Tonight, Lads’ which is, by both our admission, the best work we’ve ever done and the records are sounding stupidly good, even if I do say so myself. I’ve just launched the channel, WenlockTV on YouTube which has my first single up there at the moment, and a whole load of other singles from ‘Not Tonight, Lads’ to come too, as well as a bunch of behind the scenes stuff from the promotional tour in London and behind the scenes of making the album and whatnot. I’ve just recorded a couple of guest spots for a few peoples albums and we’re also launching the official website in the next few months too after a re-vamp, so really it’s full steam ahead at the moment.
Rockfresh: If someone was only willing to listen to one of your tracks, what one would you suggest to them?
Frid: [sigh] Fucking hell! That’s an awful question! I knew I should have done this interview with someone else! [laughs] Erm, seriously, that’s probably the most difficult but best question I’ve ever been asked in an interview. Genuinely, I have no fucking clue. Erm, well, there is a lot of really, really good stuff that hasn’t been released yet which we’re sitting on til this new album is ready. That is, without question, where my best work lies, so it’d be something from there, but if I had to pick one that I am able to disclose right now? Erm, probably the single ‘Serving Time’ or ‘Dear Daddy’. Basically, if you want to know me, you need to know those songs. As a person, ‘Dear Daddy’ is the best example me and the demons that held me back for so long, but ‘Serving Time’ is a good example of how determined I’ve been to beat that shit… then there is the promo singles ‘Hurt Myself’ and ‘Friday Night’… they are a bit dated now and things have moved on a lot since then, but they are still good representations of what I can do. But, if I had to answer your question properly… fuck it, ‘Dear Daddy’, but trust me, better shit than that is there and I can’t wait to bring you it.
